The Stables and the Barn
The building which currently houses the infamous and popular Church Street gay bars, the Stables and the Barn, has had many reincarnations over the years since its days as a saloon and convenience store in 1888. It mad its introduction into the music scene in the early 1970s as Toronto's first discotheque, La Connection.
In 1977, when the current owner purchased the building, it housed La Cavalier, a steakhouse and an upstairs bar, Jojo. Jojo bcame a gay bar and La Cavalier was closed in 1978 and became a piano bar. In 1988 the downstairs was once again reinvented into The Stables, a leather Western bar, one time a popular hangout of the gay leather group, The Spearheads.
Over the years, The Stables and the Barn have been well-known in the gay community and in Toronto for pushing the envelope. It was the first establishment in Ontario to fight the Courts and win the right to allow nudity in a bar during a private party - though the legislation says you must wear something - easily solved by wearing shoes, a belt, etc.
The Stables and the Barn continue to be at the centre of the Church Street gay community, throwing fantastic parties with Toronto's best music each night of the week. It is 100% gay-owned and with a long legacy behind it, The Stables and the Barn plan on continuing to make history for a long time to come. Join us!
